Tony Allen – There Is No End

Sadly, Tony Allen, co-inventor of Afrobeat and undisputed king of polyrhythms, passed away at in april 2020 at the age of 79. His exploits are legendary and unparalleled, having worked with Max Roach, Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and maybe most important of all, Fela Kuti. He also loved to collaborate with younger artist and worked with Damon Albarn, Zap Mama, Air and Charlotte Gainsbourg just to name a few.
His last album would demonstrate his take on hiphop, featuring a wide range of vocalists, and he had been right in the middle of production for it as tragedy struck. His co-producers Vincent Taeger and Vincent Taurelle finished what Allen had started and produced a fantastic, spiritualistic, immensly creative album that, at it’s core, is hiphop, but altogether also something completely different. Featuring the voices of Sampa The Great, Skepta, Nate Bone and many more this album is a fascinating piece of work, multilayered and multifaceted, full of energy and also roomy and breezy at the same time.
